Goals, Strategies & Performance Indicators
EII Goals, Strategies & Performance Indicators
The prime strategy of EII is to capitalise on our complementary expertise and to develop a new environment for problem driven research. A number of vertical applications have been identified, and will serve as experimental platforms for solutions generated as well as new problem generators. We present our goals below as well as those identified strategies, indicators and activities to achieve them.
Goal 1: Establish effective collaboration within and between the research themes

Indicators |
|
Fostering research collaboration |
· Application-centric workshops to define common problems and platforms for EII (including benchmark datasets) · Topic-centric workshops to stimulate exchanges for EII members in the same or overlapping areas · Seed funding (e.g., as travel support) to encourage cross-institution collaboration |
· Number of collaborations established · Number of students exchanged · Number of common initiatives established · Number joint research grant applications · Number of joint PhD supervisions · Number of joint publications |

|
Establishing genuine collaboration with leading international research groups and standardisation bodies |
· Tracking start-of-the-art research by setting up and funding taskforces · Establishing exchange programs with selected international groups, and using EII funding to seek matching funding to facilitate exchanges · Seed grants for establishing new international collaborations as determined strategically important to EII · Seed funding to encourage and facilitate collaborative grant applications for externally-funded cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional research projects. · Funding to extend Australian visits of leading international experts |
· Number and duration of visits by EII members to visit international leading groups · Number and duration of leading international experts visiting EII members · Number of joint publications with leading international researchers · Number of joint grant applications with leading international researchers |
Goal 3: To produce highest quality research outcome
|
Strategies |
Projects |
Indicators |
|
Changing research culture from valuing publication numbers to valuing quality |
· Compile and maintain ranking of international conferences and journals · Newsletter to announce publications in the high ranking sources · Establish recognition mechanisms · Mentoring systems to help ERCs to target top publications |
· Number of publications in leading conferences and journals · Number of patents · Increase in per-person and per-paper citations |
|
Identifying new opportunities through collaboration on new-frontier and large-scale problems |
· Topic-based and application-based workshops to identify large scale opportunities · Special taskforces to set up common platforms and define approaches for EII members to collaborate |
· Number of larger-than-average ARC grants · Percentage of total amount of research grants for EII members for 2006-2008 over that for 2002-2004 · Increase in per-person research grants of EII members |
|
Raising the international profile of EII research in Australia |
· Attract one top conference to Australia every year · Invite and fund 2 leading international experts to visit Australia for an extended period (avg 3 months per visit) |
· Invitations to address international conferences and funded visits · Number of self-funded international visits to EII members · No. of editorial board memberships · No. of conference chair/program committee memberships |
Goal 4: To make a greater impact of our research results
|
Strategies |
Projects |
Indicators |
|
Making EII expertise and research results useful to targeted user groups |
· Participating in strategic planning activities of federal and state governments · Attending and addressing selected user conferences |
· No. & nature of user groups identified · Number of government, industry and user group briefings · Number of user groups seeking technical advice · Number & nature of public awareness programs · Number of research papers presented in user conferences |
|
Building strategic relationships with major national and international industry players and user groups |
· Outlook workshop (once a year) to showcase EII research results and expertise to invited industry players and user groups · Industry placement and internship (funded by the industry and EII) · Technology updates by EII members in each capital city |
· Number of ARC linkage grants and applications · Number of major strategic industry partners · Number of industry participants in EII · Number of industry consultancies by EII members · Number of industry-funded internships for EII PhD and Honours students · Number of industry-linked PhD and Honours projects · Amount of cash and in-kind commitment from industry |
|
Collaborating with other research communities |
· Engagement with research leaders in selected research areas where EII research can be applied as core EII participants and members · Establish a Research Program for vertical applications, with a dedicated and experienced program leader and a committed team · Vertical application workshops (with EII members, collaborators and end-users in a specific domain): two a year · Research seminars by EII members to other research communities · Seed funding to encourage and facilitate cross-disciplinary research projects |
· Number and depth of case studies for different research fields · Number of researchers from other research communities to attend EII activities · Number of invitations for EII members to visit and participate in activities by other research communities · Number of joint ARC and other research grants between EII members and researchers from other research communities · Number of research papers published by EII members in multi-disciplinary conferences |

Student and staff exchanges between EII groups within Australia.
-
Research visits by EII members to overseas destinations, international events, and long term visits by international researchers to Australia.
-
Seminars, workshops or lecture tours which either bring international experts to Australia for short-term visit, or take advantage of the presence of an international expert already in Australia for another event.
-
Special initiatives like E-Water and Plant Genomics which promote international collaboration and industry linkage.
-
Travel awards for relevant event attendance.
