Workshop Theme
Issues related to theory building are complex and multi-faceted. There are many
indicators that researchers struggle with an understanding of what it means to make a
theoretical contribution. Views on what constitutes theory building vary markedly
across disciplines and sub-disciplines. In Information Systems these problems are
exacerbated by the differing views in the reference disciplines that are drawn upon
and also by the range of research work that is undertaken.
The workshop will allow for debate and learning around this important topic, as well
as providing an outlet for promising work on instances of theory development.
In addition to examples, critiques, reviews and debates of theory-building efforts
related to the Information Systems discipline, the workshop also specifically invites
submissions from early-career Information Systems researchers on emerging and/or
novel theory building endeavours that have the potential to shape the theoretical
landscape of IS in the near to mid-term future. To that end, this year~Rs workshop
will feature a dedicated Next Generation Track designed for scholars relatively new
to the study of information systems, to provide encouragement and to advance theory
building of significant phenomena that should or will become the focus of IS
research.

Research Paper Submissions
Papers can address any topic relevant to theory building and Information Systems,
including but not limited to:

~U      Theory building approaches and methods (inductive and deductive approaches,
methods including case studies, grounded theory and so on)
~U      Theory building in relation to the philosophy of science/research paradigms
~U      Theory building and design science
~U      The place of reference theory
~U      Building theory indigenous to Information Systems
~U      Research agendas inspiring theory building for emerging phenomena in
Information Systems
~U      Critiques of existing theories
~U      Theory building and the PhD program in Information Systems.

High quality papers that have not been previously published and are not under
consideration for publication or presentation elsewhere are solicited for
presentation. Submitted papers will undergo a double-blind review process, with at
least two independent reviewers per paper. As with the previous ISF Workshops we
expect papers will be published in the form of an edited volume, available for free
download or print-on-demand hardcopy publication, by the ANU E-Press, see
http://epress.anu.edu.au/info_systems02_citation.html

The papers in the Next Generation track will be shorter than papers in the main
track, and will have a shorter presentation time, to allow for a more interactive
feedback session with input provided by the workshop participants.
A journal special issue will be considered.

The ISF Workshops
The 2010 workshop will be the latest in a series, begun in 1999 by Kit Dampney at
Macquarie University and continued biennially from 2002 at the ANU, focussing on the
theoretical foundations of the discipline of information systems. Previous workshops
have generally been regarded by the attendees as great successes since they have
combined not only interesting and thought provoking papers and related discussion but
also highly enjoyable social programmes to complement the more formal part of the
gatherings.

Paper Submisison:
Papers are to be submitted electronically to:
        infsys-foundations@anu.edu.au
Style requirements are specified on the workshop web site. Submitted papers must use
and adhere to the paper template provided on the website.

Workshop web site:
http://www.cbe.anu.edu.au/NCISR/INFS/

Further details will be added progressively to this web site.

Other details: Submission of a paper implies that, if it is accepted, at least one
author will register for the workshop and present the paper at the workshop.
Papers accepted for presentation will be published in the Workshop Proceedings.
Copyright arrangements will be similar to those of the Australasian Conference on
Information Systems. That is, the authors assign to the Workshop organizers a
non-exclusive license to use the paper in full in the Proceedings and on the Workshop
web.
