Weather
The spring temperature at Kioloa will range from about 7°C at night to around 22°C during the day. Winds are very changeable at this time of year, and it's likely to rain because it's been very wet so far in 2011. The ocean water will still be cold, but if you're keen, bring your swimmers and a beach towel.
Internet and Mobile Phones
Mobile phone coverage is NOT guaranteed so please ensure that close family know that you may not be easily contactable via mobile. Whether or not you get a signal will depend on the weather, phone type etc.
Wireless connection access is available in all buildings, and there are also some specific broadband access points available. If you wish to use the Internet, you will need to bring your own laptop and Ethernet cable. Instructions on Internet access attached below.
On arrival & during your stay
- We will greet you and provide you with a Kioloa Information Pack and show you to your accommodation.
- Bunkhouse style sleeping accommodation is provided where you will be sharing a dormitory with up to 5 other people. The bunks have mattresses and pillows. All buildings have showers and toilets.
- All food and tea/coffee/juice will be provided during the event. For personal purchases there is a shop 5km from Kioloa. We will organize trips to the shop during the event.
- All accommodation buildings have some form of heating - either electric space heating (which must be manually turned on), or small Dimplexes in the bedrooms.
- Laundry facilities are available for a small charge.
- Sewerage and Waste: Kioloa has no mains sewerage or water, so please don't use toxic or antiseptic soaps or cleaning agents or corrosive chemicals, and don't flush any toxic or foreign materials down the toilets. Each bathroom/toilet area is provided with special bins for sanitary waste.
- Drinking Water: Please take care with water use. The only drinking water at the field station is the rainwater collected from the roofs of the field station buildings and stored in rainwater tanks. Water for showers and toilets is sourced from the property dams.
- Power Use: Please be aware of your use of electricity and gas. Power failures are common when all heaters are on at the same time as hot showers are in use! Heaters are provided in rooms and buildings, and must be switched on - and off - manually. Please only use heaters when needed, and keep doors closed when heaters are in use.
- Do not touch or use the fire extinguishers except in an emergency.
- Under no circumstances are fires allowed on the beach.
- Check with the Kioloa Managers first, before lighting an open-fire in the designated fire-pits. Total fire bans are sometimes in force, or weather conditions are unsuitable.
- Kioloa must dispose of its own garbage. Please ensure that you put your waste into the correct bins. If you're unsure, please ask.
- Before going swimming, read the water/swimming safety guidelines in Water safety at Kioloa (pdf file 701 KB) - rips are common at local beaches.
