Suggested Network Activities

Suggested EII Activities

EII Activities already underway:

2007

2006

2005

Below are suggested network activities, but new ideas always welcome:

General:

  • RHD student and staff exchanges between EII groups within Australia.

  • Research visits by EII members to overseas institutions.

  • Seminars, workshops or lecture tours which either bring international experts to Australia for short-term visit, or take advantage of the presence of an international expert already in Australia for another event.

  • Special project initiatives which promote international collaboration, industry linkage, multidisciplinary and/or cross institutional collaboration.

  • Travel awards for attendance at relevant conferences and other types of similar events. NB: EII only considers supporting conference travel if the attendance can bring specific and significant benefits to the EII Network. Such requests will be considered on a case by case basis, and successful requests would be funded from the EII institutional cash contributions. For example, if the traveller is from UQ, this expense would come from the UQ-EII budget. If taskforce coordinators believe that a certain conference trip would play an integral part in their taskforce activities, then they are welcome to make the decision to fund it.

  • Outreach activities including public lectures by EII members (or other forms of engagement with people outside the research community including community groups, industry and government).

Activities Suggested for Specific EII Goals:

Goal 1: Establish effective collaboration within and between the research themes

·         Application-centric workshops to define common problems and platforms for EII (including benchmark datasets)

·         Topic-centric workshops to stimulate exchanges for EII members in the same or overlapping areas

·         Seed funding (e.g., as travel support) to encourage cross-institution collaboration

Goal 2: To develop an active EII research community in Australia with strong international links

·         Promotion of the EII network to the general ICT research community

·         Online, on-demand EII presentations

·         Remote access to other members' resources (such as computing facilities and datasets)

·         Lecture tours by leading EII members and EII-sponsored guest lecturers

·         Promotion of the EII network in various professional associations and via members' contacts

·         Advocacy and sponsorships to attract RHD students, such as national competitions and student awards

·         Travel awards for Early Career Researchers [ECRs]

·         Delegation and empowerment of ERCs for major EII activities (such as organising workshops and leading taskforces)

·         Track start-of-the-art research

·         Establish exchange programs with selected international groups

·         Seed grants for establishing new international collaborations

·         Funding to extend Australian visits of leading international experts

Goal 3: To produce highest quality research outcome

·         Compile and maintain ranking of international conferences and journals

·         Establish recognition mechanisms

·         Mentoring systems to help ERCs target top publications

·         Topic-based and application-based workshops to identify large scale opportunities

·         Set up common platforms and define approaches for EII members to collaborate

·         Attract one top conferences to Australia

·         Invite and fund leading international experts to visit Australia for an extended period (eg. 3 months per visit)

Goal 4: To make a greater impact of our research results

·         Participate in strategic planning activities of federal and state governments

·         Attend and address selected user conferences

·         Outlook workshops to showcase EII research results and expertise to invited industry players and user groups

·         Industry placement and internship

·         Technology updates by EII members in each capital city

·         Engagement with research leaders in selected research areas where EII research can be applied

·         Establish a Research Program for vertical applications, with a dedicated and experienced program leader and a committed team

·         Vertical application workshops (with EII members, collaborators and end-users in a specific domain)

·         Research seminars by EII members to other research communities

·         Seed funding to encourage and facilitate cross-disciplinary research projects

·         Vertical applications, taskforces and user groups to consider national research priority areas
