Seminar: Semantic Web: Promising Technologies, Current Applications and Research Directions
Macquarie University - Department of Computing - Research Seminar Series
The Department would like to invite you to the following seminar:
Title: Semantic Web: Promising Technologies, Current Applications and
Research Directions
Speaker: Amit Sheth, Wright State University
Date: Thursday 14th August, 2008, 3-4pm
Location: E6A357
Abstract: The term "Semantic Web" is about seven years old, although
semantics, metadata, and ontologies in the context of Web-based information
have been investigated for at least twice as long. Semantic Web has now
reached a level of maturity that allows organizations to adopt the
technology and build mission-critical applications. The standards landscape
is increasingly well developed, with comprehensive sets of representation
and query languages (such as RDF, OWL, SPARQ, GRDDL, and SAWSDL) as W3C
recommendations. A wide and growing array of robust software products use
Semantic Web technology, which greatly assists with any implementations.
Large RDF data sets such as freebase are now available, and new companies
such as Powerset, Radar Networks, and many others are bringing exciting
applications to the market. At the same time, the prospect of combining
semantic computing with social computing, services computing, sensors and
pervasive computing, and experiential computing opens new worlds of
opportunity.
In this talk I will give an overview of the state of the art in Semantic Web
technologies that have immediate practical importance. I will describe a
few examples of real-world applications in different areas and discuss some
of the intriguing directions for further research, with a focus on
interdisciplinary research that will either benefit Semantic Web or benefit
semantic technologies.

Speaker Bio
Amit Sheth (http://knoesis.wright.edu/amit/) is the LexisNexis Ohio Eminent
Scholar and director of the Knowledge Enabled Information and Services
Center (http://knoesis.wright.edu) at Wright State University. Earlier he
founded and directed the LSDIS lab at University of Georgia, and worked at
Bellcore, Unisys and Honeywell. His research interests include the Semantic
Web, semantic mobile computing, semantic service computing, and computing
for human experience. His research has resulted in several commercial
products and he founded two companies in the area of workflow management and
Semantic Web. Sheth is a fellow of the IEEE, and is among the best cited
computer scientist (current h index = 54) in the areas of information
integration, workflow management and Semantic Web Services. He is also the
Editor in Chief (EIC) of International Journal on Semantic Web and
Information Systems (http://ijswis.org), joint EIC of Distributed and
Parallel Databases journal, co-EIC of two Springer book series, and an
editor of IEEE Internet Computing and other journals.
