EPCglobal: The Backbone of RFID Standards (A technology revolution)
Praveen Kannan, Manager of EPCglobal standards implementation for GS1 Australia
This session will focus on the various standards and research development activities within EPCglobal. With a quick introduction about the history and evolution of EPCglobal and RFID, this will talk about the various standards available within EPCglobal standards suite. The presentation will then walk through the two fundamental standards development activities of EPCglobal - The Software Action Group (SAG) and the Hardware Action Group (HAG). With this introduction, the presentation will deluge into the various SAG working groups and standards. The recently ratified EPCIS (Electronic Product Code Information Sharing) will then be discussed in details with relevance to Enterprise computing. EPCIS is built on the principle of open data sharing architecture using the internet principles - Web service and XML. Several parallels will be drawn between the emerging enterprise integration technologies including Service Orientated Architecture (SOA) and EPCIS. A quick case study of the EPCIS usage will be discussed for a real world representation of the EPCglobal standard. The session will then discuss the upcoming standards activities within EPCglobal with discussion on data security and discovery service. Finally the session will discuss the current EPC/RFID activities in Australia with issues including 4 Watt spectrum usage. The presentation will close with a Q&A session.
