ANTECEDENTS TO RFID ADOPTION: Perspectives of Retail Supply Chain Stakeholders
Stephen Waters, University of Western Sydney, NSW, Australia
The purpose of this research is to explore the impact of RFID on supply chain performance. Extant interorganisational information system theory draws attention to factors that potentially influence the adoption of RFID. Four categories of factors such as technological, economic, organisational and external are identified. Three retail supply chain stakeholder’s - retailers, retailer suppliers, and technology vendor’s perspectives were also examined. A conceptual framework presents the relationship between RFID factors, RFID adoption, and retail supply chain performance. Preliminary studies suggest that the decision to adopt RFID is preceded by a ‘state of organisational preparedness’. Organisations appear to be currently postponing adoption until knowledge of an outcome is more fully understood. The research identifies several inconsistencies and proposes a focus for further research.
